Understanding Dashas
The Planetary Periods
While the birth chart shows the karmic potential, the dasha system shows when that potential unfolds. The word dasha means “state” or “condition” - during any dasha period, a person lives under the influence of that planet, experiencing its significations and the karma it holds.
The Vimshottari Dasha System
The most widely used dasha system is Vimshottari Dasha, based on a 120-year cycle. Each planet rules a specific number of years:
| Planet | Years | Starting Nakshatra |
|---|---|---|
| Ketu | 7 | Ashwini, Magha, Mula |
| Venus | 20 | Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha |
| Sun | 6 | Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha |
| Moon | 10 | Rohini, Hasta, Shravana |
| Mars | 7 | Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha |
| Rahu | 18 | Ardra, Swati, Shatabhisha |
| Jupiter | 16 | Punarvasu, Vishakha, Purva Bhadrapada |
| Saturn | 19 | Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada |
| Mercury | 17 | Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, Revati |
Total: 120 years
How Dasha Begins
The dasha sequence starts from the Moon’s nakshatra at birth. If the Moon is at 15° Cancer, it falls in Pushya nakshatra, which is ruled by Saturn. Therefore, Saturn dasha is running at birth.
However, since the Moon is partway through Pushya, not all of Saturn’s 19 years remain - the balance is proportional to how much of the nakshatra remains at birth.
After the birth dasha completes, the sequence proceeds: Saturn is followed by Mercury, then Ketu, then Venus, and so on through the cycle.
The Multi-Level System
Dashas operate at multiple levels:
Mahadasha: The major period, lasting the full years assigned to that planet Antardasha (Bhukti): Sub-periods within the mahadasha Pratyantardasha: Sub-sub-periods And deeper…: Sukshma, prana, and more
Typically, astrologers work with mahadasha and antardasha. During Saturn mahadasha, you might be in Saturn-Jupiter antardasha, meaning Saturn’s themes are expressed through a Jupiter filter.
What a Dasha Activates
When a planet’s dasha runs, it activates:
The planet’s natural significations: Sun dasha brings focus on self, soul, authority, father, government. Moon dasha emphasizes mind, emotions, mother, home.
The houses the planet rules: If Saturn rules the 7th and 8th houses for your ascendant, Saturn dasha brings themes of relationship, transformation, longevity into prominence.
The house where the planet sits: A planet in the 10th house activates career matters during its dasha.
The planets it aspects and conjoins: Connected planets become relevant during the dasha.
The yogas it participates in: Raja yogas, dhana yogas, and other combinations manifest during relevant dashas.
Reading Dasha Effects
To understand what a dasha will bring:
1. Assess the planet’s strength: Is it well-placed, dignified, strong? Or weak, debilitated, afflicted?
2. Examine its house lordship: What areas of life does it rule for this ascendant? Is it a benefic or malefic lord?
3. Note its house placement: Where does the planet sit? What matters does that house govern?
4. Consider aspects and conjunctions: How is the planet connected to other factors in the chart?
5. Look at the Navamsha: The planet’s position in the D9 chart modifies its expression.
Dasha and Antardasha Interaction
The mahadasha planet is the main theme; the antardasha planet modifies it.
Saturn-Jupiter period: Saturn’s themes of discipline, limitation, hard work are expressed through Jupiter’s filter of wisdom, expansion, grace. This might manifest as learning (Jupiter) through difficulty (Saturn), or structured spiritual practice.
Mars-Venus period: Mars’ energy, action, and drive are expressed through Venus’s themes of relationship, beauty, and pleasure. This might manifest as passionate romance, creative projects, or conflicts in relationships.
The antardasha planet serves the mahadasha planet - it doesn’t change the fundamental theme but colors its expression.
Transitions Between Dashas
When a major dasha changes, life often shifts significantly. The transition from one mahadasha to another can bring:
- New areas of focus
- Different types of experiences
- Shifts in what matters
- Changes in external circumstances
Particularly significant are transitions involving very different planets - from benefic Jupiter dasha to malefic Saturn dasha, for example.
Challenging Dashas
Some dashas are inherently more difficult:
Dashas of functional malefics: Planets that rule the 6th, 8th, or 12th houses for your ascendant tend to bring challenges during their periods.
Dashas of weak planets: Debilitated, combust, or otherwise afflicted planets produce struggle.
Dashas of badhaka lords: The badhaka (obstructing) planet varies by moveable, fixed, or dual ascendants and can bring obstacles.
However, challenging dashas are also opportunities for growth and clearing karma. Saturn dasha may be difficult but often produces lasting achievement.
Auspicious Dashas
Dashas of yogakarakas: Planets that rule both a kendra and a trikona are especially beneficial.
Dashas of exalted/well-placed planets: Strong planets deliver their promise during their periods.
Dashas of benefic lords: When the 5th and 9th lords run their periods, fortune often improves.
Practical Application
Knowing the current and upcoming dashas helps with:
Timing decisions: Knowing when favorable periods begin helps time major life moves.
Understanding current themes: Recognizing which planet is active explains present experiences.
Preparing for transitions: Anticipating dasha changes allows preparation.
Contextualizing difficulty: Knowing a challenging dasha will end provides perspective.
The Deeper Teaching
The dasha system reveals that karma unfolds in phases. Not everything happens at once. Different chapters of life have different teachers, lessons, and opportunities.
Understanding dashas brings patience - knowing that difficult periods end and favorable periods come. It also brings acceptance - recognizing that each phase has its purpose.
The planets are the agents of karma, and their dashas are the scheduled times for that karma to arise. By understanding this system, we cooperate more wisely with our destiny.
